Renovo Area Public Library Hosts Book Signing with Native Author Steven Kurutz TODAY!
RENOVO – Renovo Area Public Library is excited to host a special book signing event on today, featuring one of the borough’s own natives, Steven Kurutz. Kurutz, a 1994 graduate of Bucktail Area High School and a writer for The New York Times, will be returning to his hometown to introduce his newest book, “American Flannel.”
The event is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. and will include a discussion about “American Flannel,” followed by a book signing. In “American Flannel,” Kurutz offers a meticulously researched exploration of American-made clothing. The book centers on the lives and careers of three dedicated artists and designers who have made it their mission to support U.S. manufacturing and avoid overseas production. Kurutz delves into the history of this once-thriving industry, providing a detailed account of the iconic Woolrich brand from its inception to its eventual closure.
Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase a limited number of copies of “American Flannel” at the event.
Adding a fun twist to the event, the Renovo Library will offer a door prize entry to anyone who wears flannel to the book signing. This engaging touch not only celebrates the book’s theme but also fosters a sense of community spirit.
Kurutz is also the author of “Like a Rolling Stone: The Strange Life of a Tribute Band,” his first book released in 2008. His return to Renovo marks a significant homecoming and a chance for locals to connect with a successful writer who began his journey in their own community.

If you miss Renovo Library’s event….The Otto Bookstore is thrilled to announce their upcoming event with Steven Kurutz, author of American Flannel and seasoned features reporter for the New York Times, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 25.
A Renovo native, Kurutz’s recently published story of the revival of America’s textile industry examines how a band of entrepreneurs brought the art and business of making clothes back to America, breathing new life into the slogan, “American Made.” The book’s engaging style showcases Kurutz’s talent for capturing the spirit and tenacity of American entrepreneurship, as well as of the people leading the charge to bring manufacturing back home. As a local, he naturally includes the history of Woolrich as one of three featured stories in the book.
Owner Kathryn Nassberg notes, “Steven’s work highlights how local manufacturing has long been integral to the fabric of many small-town communities and is primed for a revival. His deep ties to the area as a Renovo native make this message particularly meaningful.”
The May 25 event will feature the author and a panel of local veterans from the textile industry. In addition to holding an interview with the panel members, Kurutz also will be signing copies of his book.
The book has been widely acclaimed by readers and authors throughout the industry, including bestselling author and one-time millworker Stephen King: “I can confidently say this will be one of my favorite books of 2024.” Co-author of Our Towns James Fallows notes, “American Flannel is a wonderful book – surprising, entertaining, vivid and personal, but also enlightening on the largest questions of America’s economic and social future.”
With its own long and storied history within the community, the Otto Bookstore is proud to host the event. Store Manager John Shableski emphasized how the themes of community and resilience in the face of a globalized market resonate deeply with him and the owners: “the store has faced its own challenges in the wake of Amazon, so this book has particular meaning to us. We are dedicated to supporting the community and feel there is an opportunity to help Steven’s book land on the New York Times Bestsellers list. There are members of this community who have played sports professionally at the national level, won gold medals, and won Oscars, so why not help Steven become a best-selling author? Our goal is to sell 400 copies to land him on the list, and I believe that as a community we can accomplish this.”
The Otto Bookstore, America’s oldest independently owned bookstore, has been located in the heart of downtown Williamsport PA since 1841. To purchase American Flannel, or find information about future author events, visit the website: https://www.ottobookstore.com/
