LHU Baseball hosts UPJ in non-conference action
LOCK HAVEN– The Lock Haven baseball team (7-30 overall) fell to University of Pitt-Johnstown (14-22 overall), 10-5, in a non-conference game between Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East-West opponents on Tuesday afternoon (April 16) at Watkins Field.
UPJ opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first before tacking on four more to build a 5-0 advantage through an inning and a half.
Lock Haven joined the party in the bottom of the second with two runs off RBIs from Lance Baldensperger (Warren, Pa./Warren) and Francisco Taveras (Muhlenberg, Pa./Muhlenberg) to cut UPJ’s advantage to 5-2.
UPJ countered with a solo run in the top of the third, but Lock Haven again answered thanks to a sac fly by Nick White (Halethorpe, Md./Lansdowne), to make it 6-3.
It was a bullpen day for both teams and each pitching staff settled in to throw scoreless fourth and fifth innings.
However, the UPJ offense continued to produce and scored four runs over the next two innings to start to pull away, building its lead to 10-3.
Lock Haven rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but UPJ shut the door from there to seal the victory.
The Bald Eagles totaled five hits in the contest, highlighted by doubles by Taveras and Kyle Brindisi (Bethpage, Pa./Bethpage). White led the club with a pair of RBIs.
Kevin Worek (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Abington) was effective out of the bullpen for Lock Haven, tossing two scoreless innings in relief.
