Lady Wildcats Rebound With Solid Win over Selinsgrove
By Joe Walker
MILL HALL – After suffering a tough 5-3 non-league loss to Mifflin County on Monday, the Central Mountain Lady Wildcats brought the offense on Tuesday afternoon and rolled to a 19-9 ten-run ruled win over visiting Selinsgrove in a Heartland Conference game.
Junior Cora Myers blasted a three-run walk off home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the contest in the bottom of the sixth inning by the ten-run rule. It was Myers’ second hit of the game, while senior Madison Hardy added two hits and one being a two-run blast in the first inning. The home runs by the duo were the third for each one in the early going of the season.
The Lady Seals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first inning, as they recorded three hits and a walk against Lady Wildcat freshman starter Camdyn Weaver. The lead was short lived as the Lady Wildcats sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the first inning and tallied nine runs to lead 9-2 after one inning and they never looked back.
Hardy tied it at 2-2 with her first inning home run, the Lady Wildcats later got singles from Myers, Cirstyn Watson, Katelyn Bowman and Madison Wian. The hits were sandwiched around Sophie Mitchell getting hit by a pitch and Wian and Taylor Doyle receiving walks. Hardy capped off the big inning with a sac fly out for her third RBI of the inning.
The Lady Seals added another run on a hit batter, a walk and singles from Cassidy Shay and Alyvia Herrold in the top of the second inning to make it a 9-3 game. The Lady Wildcats answered with two runs in the bottom half of the second, as Taylor Wahlers reached on a fielder’s choice, then Taylor Doyle singled, Wahler and Doyle both later scored when Watson reached on a Lady Seal error and after two innings it was 11-3.
The Lady Wildcats went up 15-3 in the bottom of the third inning, as they again batted around the lineup. Wian, Hardy and Watson all had singles, to go along with a walk to Mitcherll and Doyle, Wahlers reached on a fielder’s choice and Harley Kunes reached on an error to account for the four runs.
Wian relieved starter Weaver in the fourth inning and gave up a walk, but set the rest of the Lady Seal down 1-2-3. In the bottom of the fourth the Lady Wildcats added another run on a single by Wian, a walk to Hardy and then a single by Kunes to make it a 16-3 game after four innings.
Wkian ran into a little wild streak in the fifth inning, as the Lady Seals took advantage of four walks along with two base hits by Madisson Burd in the inning and a single from Kiersten Dupert. Wian recorded a strikeout to end the inning, but the Lady Season had plated six runs in the big inning to make it a 16-9 game.
The Lady Wildcats did not score against Lady Seal reliever Dupert in the fifth inning and Wian held the Lady Seals scoreless in the top half of the sixth inning. That set the stage for the walk off three-run homer by Myers in the bottom of the sixth to end the game. Hardy and Kunes had both reached base by walks and then scored on Mhyers’ blast.
Weaver got the win, as the freshman hurler was making her first start of the season after a couple relief appearances. Weaver worked three full innings, allowing three runs on five hits, while fanning two batters and walking four. Wian also went three innings in relief, as she surrendered six runs on four hits, while walking five and fanning two batters
Wian led the hitters with three hits, while Hardy and Myers both added their two hits, including their home runs. Watson had two singles, while Bowman, Kunes, Mitchell and Taylor Doyle all added a single apiece. Madisson Burd had a 4 for 4 game for the Lady Seals, who are now 0-7 on the young season.
“That was Camdyn’s (Weaver) first start for us and she pitched a great game, especially as a freshman making her first start. Madisyn (Wian) hasn’t pitched much for us, but she has thrown a lot in travel ball, so it was good to get her in there and she did a good job. We gave Addy (McKeague) the game off, as we have a lot of games this week, so it was good to get her a rest and also came away with the win,” commented Head Coach Fred Caldwell after the win.
“Our offense gave our pitchers a good lead to work with, as we started out very well at the plate, but then kind of got into a little lull, but they bounced back with the bats later in the game,” added Caldwell.
The Lady Wildcats, who are now 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the Heartland Conference, are back in action on Thursday afternoon as they host Williamsport to battle the Lady Millionaires in a 4:30 pm game. They will then have multiple games on Saturday, as they will play in the Bellefonte Round Robin Tournament, as action is to get started at 10:00 am.
