Bucks baseball drops bizarre finish at Muncy
By Bees O’Brien
MUNCY- In what was a strange ending at Muncy on Tuesday afternoon, Bucktail’s baseball team would lose to Muncy 15-1 in 4 innings, despite only trailing by 14 runs. That’s one run shy of the mandatory 15 runs needed to secure victory prior to the fifth inning according to PIAA rules.
Muncy jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning, but Bucktail would strike in the top of the second inning with a run of their own. The Indians would put together a 3-run second inning to take a 5-1 lead.
The Bucks would hold Muncy in check until the bottom of the fourth inning. The Indians’ 10-run rally would put them up 15-1, one run shy of the mercy rule.
Sources from both sides claim that both official scorekeepers and the scoreboard operator had 15 runs for the Indians and not 16, but an outside source attending the game claimed that Muncy had in fact scored a fourth run in the second inning.
The Bucktail staff opted to call the game to prevent any further quarreling.
Braylon Fantaski, Ethan Kalafut, Gavin Pick and Kyler Friese all had hits for Bucktail.
The Bucks dropped to 0-5 on the season and will next meet Sugar Valley (0-4) on Thursday with weather permitting. That game is scheduled to take place in Farwell with a 4:30 start time.
