Bucktail wins in high scoring battle with Sheffield 74-42

By Bees O’Brien

FARWELL, PA- Sheffield entered their contest with Bucktail on a 22-game losing streak. Head coach Mike Barr’s Wolverines would battle back from a 30-0 deficit, score a season-high 42 points and see Colby Barr shatter the school’s single game passing record and still see their losing streak extend to 23 games.

Bucktail coach Frank Sutliff knows all too well that big point totals don’t always lead to victories. The Bucks scored 48 points a week ago and fell to Otto-Eldred 57-48.

Tanner Pettingill and Braylon Fantaski cut apart the Wolverines defense all night long, combining for 218 of Bucktail’s 428 yards rushing. 9 different Bucks would find their way to the stat sheet and contribute to their potent rushing attack. Six different Bucks would reach the end zone on the ground and lead the Bucks to a high scoring victory over visiting Sheffield 74-42.

Brody Pentz’s 29-yard scoring run got things going for Bucktail. Brett Mason would follow his extra point run with a 29-yard touchdown run of his own. Fantaski’s 45-yard touchdown run and 30-yard score from Pettingill had Bucktail cruising 30-0.

Sheffield’s Colby Barr would begin his record setting night with a 48-yard scoring strike to Austin Fiscus with 45 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

It was more Barr in the second quarter. Barr would deliver a scoring toss to Hayden Holden from 48 yards out to shrink the Bucks’ lead to 30-14.

Fantaski would find pay dirt again on a 78-yard pass from Pentz to extend Bucktail’s lead to 38-14.

Another Holden from Barr strike would keep the Wolverines very much alive. Fantaski would counter that Sheffield score with one of his own on a run from 24 yards out.

Barr would cap off his incredible first half with another scoring strike to senior Dylan Hardwick from 12 yards out to put the score at 46-28, in favor of Bucktail.

The third quarter would see the scoring splurge slow down a bit.

Pettingill’s 5-yard run for a score and Pentz’s two-point conversion to Gavin Yachymiak extended the Bucks’ lead to 54-28.

Colby Barr’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Hardwick would account for the Wolverines’ only score in the third.

Bucktail would get scoring runs from Will Steele and a pair of runs from Brian Dwyer in the game’s final quarter, which also would see Barr complete his sixth touchdown pass. His 45 yarder to Michael Knapp would put Barr in the Sheffield record books with 427 yards passing.

The Bucks, now 4-1, will have to tighten things down when they hit the road this Friday when they meet Cameron County (3-2) in Emporium. The Red Raiders were stunned by Coudersport 26-14 Friday night.

Sheffield (0-4) will host Otto-Eldred (4-1) on Saturday.
