Wildcat boys soccer downed by Selinsgrove
SELINSGROVE, PA – The Central Mountain boys soccer team traveled to Selinsgrove on Tuesday night for a big PHAC game. Selinsgrove, one of the better teams in the conference and a perennial contender, came into the game with a 4-1 record. They are now 5-1 after handing the Wildcats their first loss of the season by a 6-2 score.
The Wildcats found themselves in an early lead when Pierce Long tucked away his second goal of the year. Fellow senior Zane Cooper took a long free kick into the box that found Long’s foot, who calmly found the back of the net ten minutes in.
Selinsgrove responded quickly, adding two goals of their own before the end of the half. The Wildcats had a few other opportunities, but nothing dangerous enough to scare the Seals.
The second half did not start out the way CM wanted it to. Selinsgrove’s firepower came out fast, adding to their lead.
Jack Grieco added a goal in the 51st minute, his first of the season. Grieco was taken down in the box earning a penalty kick, and the senior stepped up himself to bury it.
The Wildcats did not lay down and wait for the game to end. Lincoln Breon struck the post, Peyton Jones had a curling shot saved beautifully by the keeper, while both Asher Talbot and Dylan Bechdel had shots on goal in the second half.
In total, CM had 10 shots on goal for the night. The attack was strong at times, and they will look to do a better job capitalizing on their chances going forward.
The Wildcats are back in action Thursday night, on the road at Williamsport with a 5:30 JV kickoff, followed by varsity at 7 p.m.
