Words of Grace
By Rev. Mahlon Nevel
“Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).
“Their strength is to sit still” (Isaiah 30:7)
Jesus knew how to be still, and to sit still, in the of his Father. “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed” (Mark 1:35).
It was in the stillness of the early morning hours. It was in a quiet place where he could be alone
“And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God” (Luke 6:12).
There were times when Jesus spent the whole night in prayer. The mountain was a place where he could silently be still and know that the Father was listening.
In a book of quotations the question is asked: What does silence create? Here are some of the answers.
It makes room for listening.
It gives freedom to observe.
It allows time to think.
It provides space to feel.
It broadens awareness.
It opens the entry of peace.
Thomas Moore prayed, “O Thou who dries the mourner’s tears! How dark this world would be, If when deceived and wounded here, we could not fly to Thee.”
That place is “a place of quiet rest, near to the heart of God.”
