LH women’s basketball drops last minute thriller at Bloomsburg
BLOOMSBURG, PA – The Lock Haven women’s basketball team (7-13, 5-10 PSAC) went on the road to Bloomsburg University (8-11, 6-9 PSAC) for a close Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest on Wednesday, with the important conference victory coming down to the final seconds, but the Bald Eagles were downed by a three-pointer in the final seconds to drop the contest, 48-45.
During the low scoring defensive battle, the Huskies held a slight 10-5 advantage after the first quarter.
Jackie Fetsko (Marion Center, Pa./Marion Center) finished off the first quarter with a three-point play and grabbed four more points to lead the team with seven points at halftime, but the Huskies held a strong 28-14 lead going into the second half.
For the first five minutes of the third quarter, the Bald Eagles controlled the game, pushing an 11-3 run that was bolstered by seven points from Alana Robinson (Rockaway, N.J./Pope John Paul II), to close the gap to just 31-25. With six points from Brooke Lawyer (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic), LHU trimmed the lead down to just four, and the host leading 36-32 at the end of the third quarter.
To start the final quarter, the Huskies swished the first four of five baskets to take a 44-36 lead, but Lawyer responded explosively with seven points in just 86 seconds, to reach within three points.
In the final minutes, the Bald Eagles closed the lead to just two, 45-43, and after a five second violation, Robinson sent her final basket in with 18 seconds to tie it up, but a Bloomsburg three-pointer with five seconds to play delivered the game winning shot for the Huskies to win the tightly contested conference clash, 48-45.
The Bald Eagles will return home to host Shepherd University in PSAC East action on Saturday at 1 p.m.
