LH women’s basketball drops road contest at Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, PA – The Lock Haven women’s basketball team (7-7, 5-4 PSAC) dropped a road game against Kutztown University (8-7, 6-3 PSAC) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest on Saturday afternoon in Kutztown; the final, 72-65.

Lock Haven and Kutztown went back and forth in the early minutes of the opening quarter, but the hosts gained control late and led 22-16 after the opening ten minutes thanks to their control of the boards.

The Bald Eagles came out and quickly cut the lead down to two points at 24-22 in the second. Although The Haven went into the half trailing 36-33, Lock Haven outscored Kutztown in the second quarter 17-14. The Bald Eagles took advantage of their opponent’s turnovers in the half and turned eight Golden Bear tunrovers into 11 points. Alana Robinson (Rockaway, N.J./Pope John Paul II) and Brooke Lawyer (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) carried the scoring in the opening half and combined for 22 points.

An even third quarter saw both teams scored 13 apiece and the entertaining contest was balanced delicately at 39-36 going into the final quarter.

The Golden Bears jumped out quick in the final period and took a seven-point lead in the first two and half minutes of the fourth quarter. This lead propelled to the hosts down the stretch and they held on for the win, 72-65.

Robinson paced all players in scoring and finished the game with 22 points, just one off her career high.

Lawyer went on to finish with 15 points as one of four Bald Eagles in double figures. Olivia Smith (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley (Frostburg State)) had 13 points, and Taylor Leidy (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) chipped in 10 points.

Lock Haven returns home to face West Chester on Wednesday (Jan. 18) at 5:30 p.m. That game also serves as the Bald Eagles Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance Day and Community Day and admission is free for all in attendance.
