No. 18 LH women’s wrestling caps busy weekend at National Dual Meet Championships with 2-0 Day
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 18 Lock Haven women’s wrestling team capped a busy two days of action at the 2023 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Multi-Division National Dual Meet Championships in Louisville, Kentucky with a 2-0 record Saturday.
Friday Lock Haven went 1-2 overall on day one of the tournament, but the nationally-ranked Bald Eagles bounced back in a big way today, and closed the national event in style.
Saturday LHU opened the day with a thrilling 23-20 victory over Wisconsin – Stevens Points, before upsetting No. 12 Adrian 26-17 in the ninth-place match.
The Bald Eagles were 3-2 at this weekend’s NWCA National Dual championship event, and the two wins today pushed Lock Haven to 9-3 overall in dual meets this season.
In the day’s opening win over Wisconsin – Stevens Point, Lock Haven won six of 10 bouts. An early highlight came from Kaelani Shufeldt (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina), who is ranked No. 7 at 109. She recorded a tech fall.
Victoria Smith (El Centro, Calif./Brawley Union (Oklahoma City)) and Grace Stem (Snow Shoe, Pa./Bald Eagle) both won by tech fall, and Trinity Monaghan (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) recorded a pin in the final bout of the dual. Lily Sherer (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) and Madison Matta (Blue Ridge, Pa./Waynesboro) both added victories as well, which helped push Lock Haven by Wisconsin – Stevens Point.
Smith won by tech fall at 123, before Sherer and Matta posted back-to-back decisions at 130 and 136 respectively. Stem added bonus points by a tech fall victory at 143. With Lock Haven trailing in the dual heading into the final bout at 191, Monaghan provided the heroics with a thrilling match-deciding pin.
Lock Haven, ranked 18th nationally, capped the tournament with a 26-17 upset-win over No. 12 Adrian in the ninth-place bout.
In the upset win over Adrian, Lock Haven won six of 10 bouts and all six Haven victories came by way of the bonus-point variety. The Bald Eagles racked up four tech falls and tallied two pins.
Shufelft (109), Smith (123), Stem (143) and Monaghan (191) all won by tech fall, while Sherer and Matta posted back-to-back pins at 130 and 136, respectively. Stem’s tech fall made a statement in the dual as she knocked off fifth-ranked Clarissa Agostini.
LHU led 22-6 after Stem’s tech fall at 143, which came in the seventh of 10 bouts. Adrian posted back-to-back wins by forfeit, and cut the Lock Haven lead to 22-16 after nine bouts, but once again Monaghan came up big and iced the dual win with bonus points at 191 in the 10th and final match of the dual.

The Bald Eagles will return to competition with dual action on Sunday, January 15 when they travel to the Sacred Heart Tri-Meet.
