LH Women’s Wrestling goes 1-2 at NWCA National Dual Meet Championships
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In their first action of 2023, the No. 18 Lock Haven women’s wrestling team (7-3) hit the mats three times Friday and faced two top-10 opponents at the 2023 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Multi-Division National Dual Meet Championships in Louisville, Kentucky.
The championships featured all five of the top ranked teams in the latest NWCA rankings, and seven of the top ten.
In the opener, Lock Haven fell to the No. 4 team in the country McKendree University, 34-12. The Bald Eagles won three of eight contested bouts, but bonus points and a pair of LHU forfeits carried the Bearcats to the win on Friday morning.
Lock Haven then squared off with Limestone in the consolation bracket in the afternoon. The Bald Eagles rolled past the Saints, 32-12, winning five of six contested bouts, all of which came by way of a bonus points.
With the win over Limestone, The Haven advanced to the consolation quarterfinals with another showdown against a top-10 team in No. 7 Presbyterian College. The Blue Hose took four of six contested bout and brought home the win 27-18 over The Haven.
The Bald Eagles No. 7 ranked 109-pounder Kaelani Shufeldt (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina) continued to flex her muscles and came out 3-0 on the day. Most notably, Shufeldt picked up a convincing 7-1 decision victory over the eighth-ranked Pauline Granados of McKendree.
A quintuple of Bald Eagles notched 2-1 records on the day for LHU as Victoria Smith (El Centro, Calif./Brawley Union (Oklahoma City)), Lily Sherer (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley), Grace Stem (Snow Shoe, Pa./Bald Eagle), Jessica Johnson (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) and Trinity Monaghan (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) all turned in impressive performances.
Smith (123) and Sherer (130) each notched both of their wins by tech fall, while Stem (130) and Johnson (155) picked up one tech fall each. Monaghan (191) powered her way to one of the two Bald Eagle pins on the day. Madison Matta (Blue Ridge, PA Waynesboro Area) picked up The Haven’s other pin at 136 pounds in LHU’s win over Limestone.
