LHU men’s wrestling opens National Collegiate Duals, falls to Northern Iowa, Ohio State

NEW ORLEANS – After a two-week layoff, the Lock Haven University Division I men’s wrestling team returned to the mats Monday as the Bald Eagles were in action on the first of two days of competition at the Journeymen Collegiate Wrestling Duals 2.0 in New Orleans. Lock Haven opened the day versus No. 22 Northern Iowa, before capping Day 1 versus No. 3 Ohio State.

Lock Haven fell to No. 22 Northern Iowa, 36-3 and the Bald Eagles dropped the dual with No. 3 Ohio State, 39-3.
With the two losses, The Haven fell to 1-4 overall in early-season dual action. Four of Lock Haven’s five dual matches – to date – this season have come against teams ranked in the top-25.

Leading the way for Lock Haven was nationally-ranked Anthony Noto (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima (NC State)). Noto, ranked No. 20 at 125, went 1-1 on the day and Avery Bassett (Middleburg, Pa./Midd-West (George Mason)) picked up a victory for Lock Haven in the match vs. Ohio State.

No. 22 Northern Iowa won nine of 10 bouts on the way to the 36-3 victory. It was Noto who provided the biggest highlight for Lock Haven as he opened the match with a thrilling and dominating 11-4 decision over Kyle Gollhofer.

The Northern Iowa lineup featured seven ranked wrestlers from 133 to 184. At 157, Ashton Eyler (Millersburg, Ohio/ Claymont High (Iowa Central CC)) was edged 6-4 by No. 27 Derek Holschlag and Bassett dropped a narrow 6-4 decision at 165 to No. 11 Austin Yant.

Ohio State won nine of 10 bouts and the No. 3 Buckeyes picked up a 39-3 victory.

The dual with Ohio State opened with a thrilling bout between ranked wrestlers at 125. Noto was edged out 7-4 by No. 11 Malik Heinselman. At 157, Isaac Wilcox slipped by Eyler, 8-7.

The Buckeyes led 19-0 before Bassett put Lock Haven on the board with a hard-fought 8-2 decision over Klay Reeves at 165.

The Bald Eagles will return to action Tuesday against an opponent to be determined. Check GoLHU.com and the @HavenAthletics social media pages for schedule updates.

The Bald Eagles will then break until the new year. Lock Haven will kick off the 2023 calendar portion of the schedule on Friday, Jan. 6 at the David Lehman Franklin & Marshall Open.
