Words of Grace

By Rev. Mahlon Nevel

“God is so good, God is so good, God is so good, he’s so good to me!”

Are you able to sing about the goodness of God? It is the goodness of God that leads to repentance.

Romans 2:4 refers to those who do not know this. They despise The riches of God’s goodness, forbearance and longsuffering, not knowing that it is God’s goodness that is leading them to repentance.

In Psalm 86:5 David declares that the Lord is good and is ready to forgive. He is plenteous in mercy to all of those who call upon him.

The Lord proclaimed to Moses in Exodus 34:6 that he is merciful and gracious longsuffering, and abundant and goodness and truth.

The story is told about a father who wanted to teach his son a lesson about God’s great goodness. He took him to the top of a high hill and pointed northward towards Scotland. Then he pointed southward toward England and eastward towards the ocean.

As the father swept his arm around the whole circle of the horizon, he said, “Johnny, my boy, God’s goodness and love is as big as all that.”

“Why father,” the boy exclaimed “then we must be right in the middle of it.”
