Words of Grace
By Rev. Mahlon Nevel
“Do you suppose that I have come to give peace on earth?” Jesus asked. “I tell you, no; but rather division” (Luke 12:51).
Then he said that from now on there would be five in one family divided, three against two, and two against three.
Fathers would be divided against their sons, and sons against their father. Mothers would be divided against their daughters, and daughters against their mother.
In Matthew 10:34 Jesus told his disciples not to think that he came to send peace on earth. He came not to send peace, but a sword.
A man’s enemies, he said, would be those in his own household. (v.36)
The Bible is described as a sword. We are to take “the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17)
Hebrews 4:12 tells us that the Word of God is sharper than a two-edged sword. It pierces to divide the soul and the spirit. The Bible is a divider, just as Jesus is.
Both Jesus and his word bring us to god. And Jesus working through the word of God brings peace to our hearts.
