LHU: Spangenberg’s OT-winner lifts Lock Haven over Bellarmine
LOCK HAVEN, PA – Martina Spangenberg (Buenos Aries, Argentina/Piaget) scored 50 seconds into the second overtime period and the goal helped the Lock Haven University field hockey team (2-0) down Bellarmine University (0-2), 1-0 (2OT), this afternoon in the Bald Eagles 2022 home opener.
With the win, Lock Haven remained unbeaten and improved to 2-0 on the young season. The Bald Eagles opened the 2022 season on Friday (Aug. 26) with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Lehigh. Bellarmine fell to 0-2 overall after opening the season with a loss to Rider Friday on The Haven’s Charlotte Smith Field.
Spangenberg’s game-winning goal came off a perfect backhanded crossing-pass from Brooke Hofsass (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin).
Lock Haven goalkeeper Kelsey Felix (Hallam, Pa./Eastern York) was called upon to make two saves in protecting the clean sheet. The shutout was her first and LHU’s first of the season.
For the Bald Eagles, it was a total team effort that led the squad to victory. Amy Stevens (Castle Creek, N.Y./Whitney Point) and Jazmin Palma (Entre Rios Providence Argentina/Colegio Sagrado Corazon de Jesus) both stood out as did freshman Brynlee Pinschenat (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), who provided a speedy offensive spark.
Lock Haven outshot visiting Bellarmine 11-3 and the Bald Eagles held an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Today’s home opener was the first of six straight homes for Lock Haven.
The Haven will return to action next Sunday (Sept. 4) in a home contest against Colgate University (12 p.m.).
