SCRANTON – Former Renovo resident, Darcie Schaffer and her fellow team members Dr. Joyce Vrabec, Medical Director at Volunteers in Medicine, and Donna Henderson, Donna is an eight year breast cancer survivor and a volunteer at VIM. The team walked in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Scranton PA in memory of Darcie’s best friend Karen Dwyer-Jones who lost her battle with breast cancer on Oct 3, 2010. The Komen Northeastern Pennsylvania Race for the CURE has become a September tradition where the community bans together in the fight against breast cancer.

Team Volunteers In Medicine raised $745 for the Race for a Cure thanks to support of her family and friends. Darcie works for Volunteers In Medicine as the Assistant to the Executive Director. Darcie will always hold Komen dear to her heart with the hope they will find a cure for this terrible disease.

As in past years the route was decorated with PINK everywhere, from local businesses decorating their store fronts with balloons to painted pink ribbons on the windows. What a moving experience to see houses decorated and residents standing on their porches dressed in PINK in support of the runners and walkers! Local schools had their bands and cheerleaders out in full force, standing along the route to support the cause and participants of the race. We had 4263 registered runners and walkers that raised approximately $155,000.00 of which 75% will go to the 16 counties that NE Komen supports.

There were approximately 5,000 registered participants, raising $100,000 for the Komen Foundation.
Susan G. Komen Northeastern Pennsylvania keeps 75% of the funds raised to support the 19 counties they cover in Northeast PA. Clinton County is one of the sixteen counties that receive grant to provide free mammograms.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Please remind your mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters, to talk to their doctor about scheduling their yearly mammogram.
