LHU wrestlers fall to Lehigh, 37-3

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University men’s wrestling team (0-2) hosted No. 22 Lehigh University (3-1) on Saturday afternoon at Thomas Fieldhouse. The Mountain Hawks came away with a 37-3 victory over the Bald Eagles.

Lock Haven surrendered a forfeit at 125 pounds before the match’s most thrilling bout at 133 pounds.

Gable Strickland (Benton, Pa./Benton) met up with No. 22 Malyke Hines. After the first period, Strickland found himself in a 6-1 hole while Hines racked up 2:45 in riding time.

In the second period, a pair of penalty points were awarded to Strickland for locked hands as the Benton, Pa. native started to carve away at the deficit. Strickland picked up a third-period escape to bridge the gap to 6-4.

Strickland picked up an escape and a takedown before Hines clawed back and escaped to bring the match back to neutral late in the matchup. From there, Strickland used a quick takedown and put Hines on his back to score the six-point move and take the lead at a 13-10 margin. Hines added a late escape and riding time bonus, but it wasn’t enough as Strickland turned in the biggest victory of his young Bald Eagles career with a 13-12 win. On Strickland’s win, Lock Haven trimmed the Lehigh lead to 6-3.

At 141 pounds, Nick Stonecheck (Alpharetta, Ga./Buford High School) fell by a 6-3 tally in a hard-fought affair. Dashawn Farber (Bethlehem, Pa./Nazareth High School) fell by a 15-4 major decision at 149 pounds and No. 33 Ben Barton (Louisville, Ky./Trinity (Campbell)) was defeated by fall at the 2:07 mark in a showdown with No. 10 Josh Humphreys at 157 as Lehigh extended its lead to 19-3 at the intermission.

Out of the break, Ashton Eyler (Millersburg, Ohio/Claymont High (Iowa Central CC)) battled No. 27 Brian Meyer. Eyler used a trio of escapes, a penalty point and a riding time bonus but fell in a hard-fought 6-5 loss at 165 pounds.

Tyler Stoltzfus (Mifflinburg, Pa./Saint Joseph’s Academy) controlled the match throughout at 174 pounds but surrendered a late takedown to fall by a 5-4 tally.

Lehigh scored a pair of decisions over the final two contested bouts at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively, and No. 10 Jordan Wood won via forfeit to wrap up a 37-3 victory for the visiting Mountain Hawks.
