CLEVELAND – Standout Luke Werner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) of the Division I men’s wrestling team has been named the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Co-Wrestler of the Week for his recent efforts on the mats at the Navy Classic.

Werner went 4-0 and cruised to the 125-pound title at last Saturday’s Navy Classic. The redshirt-senior capped his dominating and perfect day with an upset-win in the finals. With the four wins, the Bald Eagle ran his career win total to 97 career victories as he looks to become the 23rd member of The Haven’s 100-win club.

Werner opened the day with a 15-0 (5:12) tech fall over Jordan White (The Citadel) and followed that up with a quick (27-second) pin over Bucknell’s Calvin Dalton. In the semifinals, Werner dropped Ohio’s Oscar Sanchez, 8-4. In the finals, Werner upset nationally-ranked Jake Ferri of Kent State. At the time, Ferri was ranked No. 31 nationally, but Werner secured a late takedown to win 12-10 in a thriller.

The impressive weekend also helped push Werner back into the national rankings, now ranked No. 33 by InterMat.

Werner was one of two Bald Eagles ranked as 157-pounder Ben Barton (Louisville, Ky./Trinity(Campbell)) was also ranked (No. 33).

Up next, the Bald Eagles look forward to hosting the 2021 Mat-Town Open Tournament. Action is set for a 9:30 a.m. start in Thomas Fieldhouse on Sunday, Nov. 28. More information on the tournament, including live result links can be found at GoLHU.com. Brackets will be available Sunday morning.

It will mark LHU’s fourth straight early-season tournament appearance and it marks the first action this season at home. Of note: Recently, the LHU wresting team announced the Lock Haven Classic Tournament scheduled for December 29 has been canceled.

Looking ahead, LHU will open the dual portion of the schedule at home on Thursday, December 2 vs. Michigan State. Two days later on December 4, the Bald Eagles will host Lehigh. Those two early-December and noteworthy dual matchups mark two of five true-home duals in Thomas Fieldhouse. This season, Lock Haven will also host Mid-American Conference duals vs. George Mason, Clarion and Cleveland State. The full 2021-22 LHU men’s wrestling schedule is available at GoLHU.com.
