LHU women’s soccer edged out on late Millersville goal

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women’s soccer team (4-6-1, 2-6-1 PSAC East) and visiting Millersville University (4-4-3, 4-4-2 PSAC East) locked up in a tightly contested Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match Wednesday night at Hubert Jack Stadium, and in the end, the visiting Marauders found a late-goal to edge LHU, 3-2.

Abby Burdyn (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) and Evelyn Ciaccia (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) scored for the Bald Eagles.

The game was tied 2-2 late and it looked as if LHU would play in its second straight overtime-game, but Millersville found the game-winner in the 87th minute.

The Bald Eagles jumped on Millersville early and led 1-0 less than two minutes into the match after Burdyn sent a 20-yard blast into the side-netting at the far post. The early strike came just 1:58 into the contest after she collected a loose ball just outside the penalty area.

The visitors leveled the score at 1-1 in the 32nd minute and shortly after Lock Haven goalkeeper Kylie Auman (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns Valley) made a big save to keep the match tied.

At halftime, Millersville held an 8-5 advantage in shots, but the score remained knotted at 1-1 after 45 minutes.

Just like the first half, Lock Haven struck early in the second. In the 50th minute Evelyn Ciaccia (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) knocked one home after Eva Stoessel’s (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) initial shot was turned away by Millersville goalie Reagan Kolinksi.

With just over 22 minutes to play, Ciaccia created another scoring opportunity. She split through three Millersville defenders and with one player to beat, she fired a left-footed shot that required a diving save.

Lock Haven couldn’t shake the visitors and the Marauders tied the match at 2-2 in the 80th minute of play.

In the 87th Millersville knocked home the game-winner.

Auman finished with five saves.

For the game, Lock Haven held a 14-12 advantage in shots.

LHU will host Shippensburg University at 4 p.m. on Saturday in PSAC East action. The match will serve as the Bald Eagles 2021 Senior Night.
