CM girls’ soccer edged by Selinsgrove, 3-2

SELINSGROVE, PA – The Central Mountain girls soccer team battled from whistle to whistle against a very good Selinsgrove Lady Seals soccer team Monday but ultimately fell by a 3-2 score.

The Lady Wildcats got on the board first after a penalty kick belted the cross bar and bounced back into play. Halle Lodek found the loose ball in the box and slotted it home for the first goal of the game. A minute later, the Lady Seals blasted their way down the field and converted a cross to tie the game as the half ended not far from that.

The second half again saw the Lady Wildcat soccer team take the lead as Jaz Anderson struck the ball from outside the box and over the keeper’s head to put the Lady Wildcat team ahead. The Lady Seals answered with the tying goal with under twenty minutes left and then took the lead at 3-2 not long after. The Lady Wildcats continued to mount pressure and drive the ball into the attacking third but couldn’t convert and came up short.

Lady ‘Cat coach Ryan Veltri said, “It was a fabulous display of hard work, organization and putting the ball on frame which only continues to display a positive progression. The girls will need to learn how to hold onto a lead and develop game management to play teams this good. Hats off to Selinsgrove, they are coached well, had a tactical game plan and were very organized in their attack. The Lady Wildcat soccer team tried their best to mix it up with one of the best teams in the conference and proved they are getting better everyday!”

The CM JV team lost as the goal scored almost couldn’t be found in the back of the net as the sun had disappeared and the darkness made it hard to play. They were unlucky with chances and had a few attempts to get on the board first but were inches short. Coach Veltri said it was the first 11v11 game of the season, the girls offered many new questions and are proving there is lots of depth in the program.

The varsity loss put the season at 0-4, the last two losses by identical 3-2 scores. CM was to host Mifflinburg on Wednesday and host Bald Eagle Area for Senior Night Saturday at 5 p.m.
