Dollar General store proposed for Loganton

LOGANTON, PA – A Loganton property owner wants to locate a Dollar General store on part of a 3.5 acre parcel along the highway heading into the town from the north. The proposal from Eric and Lexi Gaydos and the proposed developers has been scheduled for a public hearing at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25 before the borough zoning hearing board.

The plan has brought some level of opposition from Sugar Valley residents, voiced on social media postings seen on the Friends of a Livable Sugar Valley site, a Facebook group. There is also a petition in opposition to the project being circulated through the Loganton area. The site is zoned commercial and sits vacant across from the Gaydos’ former residence at 126 Water Street; the store location is proposed for North Mill Street (Route 477), on the site’s west side.

The notice of the public hearing says the applicants are Franklin Land Associates, LLC/GBT Realty, the Gaydos’ the owners. The applicants are requesting variances on the front and rear setbacks for the building and a reduction in required parking spaces from 46 to 32. The site is zoned as commercial and nearby residents said there are also wetland issues involved.

Opponents cite the wetlands matter and what they say would be a negative aesthetic effect for Sugar Valley. Supporters say the wetlands issue will be addressed as to where the store would be built on the land and the new business would provide new jobs in Sugar Valley.
