Strong Opening Night for Wildcat Wrestling

WILLIAMSPORT – With eight new faces in the Central Mountain wrestling line-up, Wildcat fans were not sure what to expect as the 2019-20 season opened Friday night at the annual Tom Best Memorial Top Hat Tournament.

But if Friday’s performance was any indication, the new season could be yet another solid one for a wrestling program rich with tradition. The Wildcats advanced 10 wrestlers, all underclassmen, into the Saturday 10 a.m. quarterfinal round. The ten picked up six falls, a major decision and a technical fall to hold a solid second place in the team standings behind pre-tourney favorite Saucon Valley.

Head coach Biff Walizer praised his team’s effort. He said, “There were ups and downs, but one thing, the effort was there. We can improve on technical mistakes.” He liked what he saw from his multiple first-time starters, saying all went “all out.” As an example, Walizer cited Ashton Intallura at 170 pounds, a sophomore in just his second year of wrestling. Intallura, filling in for the injured Caleb Porter, won his varsity debut with a fall before falling in his second match against a District 11 place-winner from Palisades.

Wildcats in Saturday’s morning quarterfinals include freshman Gino Serafini at 106; sophomore Derek Keen at 113; freshman Braylen Corter at 120; sophomore Taylor Weaver at 126; junior Kaden Falls at 145; junior Lane Porter at 152; sophomore Damien Galentine at 160; junior Nik Miller at 195; junior Gage Sutliff at 220 and junior Cyrus McCarl at 285.

Falls came from Corter, Weaver, Falls, Porter, Miller and McCarl. Serafini had a bye, Keen a technical fall, Sutliff a major; the most exciting win was Galentine’s 13-12 overtime victory, a bout he trailed late but rallied for the win.
