Hazel Named EWL Athlete of the Week

Returning NCAA Qualifier Corey Hazel Earns Eastern Wrestling League Top Honors

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Yesterday (Sunday, Nov. 18), Corey Hazel (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) of the No. 16 Lock Haven University wresting team went 4-0 on the way to the 184-pound title at the Black Knight Invite, hosted by Army West Point, and he was rewarded for his dominating efforts by being named this week’s Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Athlete of the Week.

The redshirt-junior and returning NCAA Division I national qualifier highlighted the day with an 11-5 win over Noah Stewart of Army in the finals, avenging a loss to Stewart a week ago. Stewart, No. 1 seed Sunday, downed Hazel last week at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic, but Hazel rolled past him this weekend with an 11-5 victory.

Hazel reached the finals thanks to three-hard fought wins. He downed Logan Rill (Buffalo) 2-0, Trey Rogers (Hofstra) 2-1 and Lou Deprez (Binghamton) 6-4.

This marks the second straight week where a Bald Eagle wrestler has been named the EWL Athlete of the Week. Last week, Chance Marsteller (New Park, Pa./Kennard-Dale) took home the honor.

2018-19 EWL Athlete of the Week honors:

November 4: Matt Voss (George Mason)

November 11: Chance Marsteller (Lock Haven)

November 18: Corey Hazel (Lock Haven)
