Marsteller One of Four LHU Champions at Journeymen Classic
TROY, N.Y. – Returning All-American Chance Marsteller (New Park, Pa./Kennard-Dale) downed No. 11 Branson Ashworth, 7-4, in the 165-pounds finals to cap a perfect day and season debut, as he led the way Sunday for the No. 20 Lock Haven University wrestling team at the 2018 Journeymen Collegiate Classic Tournament in Troy, New York. Marsteller was one of four champions on the day for the Bald Eagles.
DJ Fehlman (Warren, Pa./Warren), Brock Port (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) and Parker McClellan joined Marsteller as individual champions at their respective weight class and in their pool today. The Journeymen Classic features a unique format where wrestlers are divided into different pools at each weight class.
Marsteller, ranked No. 3 at 165, went 3-0 and claimed the 165A title.
Fehlman was 3-0 and took home the title in the 141C bracket. Port was 4-0 with three tech falls as he won the 149D bracket and McClellan, a freshman, was 3-0 with two pins as he claimed the championship in the 197D pool.
Luke Werner was (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) was second at 125B and Jonathan Ross (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York) was second at 149B.
No. 8 Thomas Haines (Quarryville, Pa./Solanoc) was third at 285A and Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) was third at 141A.
No. 17 Corey Hazel (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) was fourth overall in a strong 184A pool. Breylon Douglas (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and Blake Reynolds (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) were both third at 184C and 197C, respectively, rounding out a solid day for Lock Haven.
Marsteller (ranked No. 3 nationally) opened the day with a dominating 10-3 win over NC State’s Thomas Bullard and he followed it up with a flawless effort vs. Cole Wysocki of Purdue. Marsteller moved to 2-0 on the day with an 18-2 (3:11) tech fall over Wysocki. In the finals, Marsteller capped a perfect 3-0 day with another flawless effort as he cruised by Wyoming’s Branson Ashworth. Ashworth entered the day ranked No. 11 at 165 pounds and he’s a two-time NCAA qualifier. Last season, Marsteller won a school record 44 matches and finished the season as an All-American (fourth).
Fehlman continued to looked solid at 141 pounds, up from 133 where he qualified for the NCAA Championships back in 2017. He was 3-0 and downed Lehigh’s Joe Lebech, 3-1 (SV) for the title. Fehlman opened the day with a 17-7 major over North Carolina State’s AJ Leitten and he downed Army’s PJ Ogunsanya, 5-2 to advance to the title bout.
Port was unstoppable in the 149D bracket and he breezed to a 4-0 record with three tech falls on the day. Before receiving a win by way of forfeit in the finals, Port outscored his first three opponents 49-4 (3 techs) as none of his first three wins went the seven minute distance as he ripped through the field.
McClellan went 3-0 on the way to the title in the 197D bracket. The Bald Eagle rookie opened the day with back-to-back pins, before dropping NC State’s Tyrie Houghton 14-8 in the finals.
Werner opened the day with a 6-4 (SV1) victory over KJ Fenstermacher (West Virginia) and he majored Zach Atencio of Oklahoma, 19-9 before dropping his only bout of the day in the 125B finals. He was edged out, 5-3 (SV1) by Zurich Storm (NC State). Werner was 2-1 on the day.
Ross finished the day 2-1 and was second in the 149B poll. He opened the day with a pin and moved to 2-0 and into the finals thanks to a hard-fought, 3-2, win over Wyoming’s Jaron Jensen. Ross lost to Parker Filius of Purdue by way of pin the finals.
Haines was 2-1 on the day (285A). He opened the day with a 2-0 win over The Citadel’s tough Michael Mcaleavey. Haines dropped his second bout of the day, as he was edged 6-5 by No. 19 Take Orndorff of Utah Valley. Haines rebounded and knocked off Purdue’s Jacob Aven, 7-1, for third.
Despite a fourth-place showing, Hazel battled it out with some of the best. He downed rival Trevor Allard of Bloomsburg, 3-2, before being edged 1-0 by No. 6 Ryan Preisch of Lehigh. Hazel was edged out in the third-place match, 2-1 by Army’s Noah Stewart.
The nationally-ranked Bald Eagles will return to action next Sunday, November 18 at the Black Knight Invite hosted by Army West Point.
