Wildcats Finish Strong with 1-0 Double Overtime Win over Jersey Shore
BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – It was almost “déjà vu all over again’ for the the first meeting of the season for the Central Mountain and Jersey Shore boys’ soccer teams.
One year ago, these two neighboring rivals played 100 minutes of soccer to a 0-0 tie. Tonight they played 99 minutes and 58 seconds with the scoreboard locked to 0-0 once more before fortune swung in the Wildcats’ favor for a thrilling 1-0 double overtime golden goal with 2 seconds remaining on the clock.
The goal came on a follow up to a Central Mountain corner kick from Jenson Brown that lofted to the far side of the goal where Jeremiah found the ball and kicked it past three Bulldog defenders for the exciting finish to a hard fought contest.
During regulation play, the action was mostly in the middle of the field with both teams making forays into offensive territory only to leave empty handed as the opposing defense would stiffen and shut down the opportunity.
The pace was quick and the intensity and aggressive attitude was strong for both teams. Despite the aggressiveness, they play was relatively clean and fast paced. Jersey shore committed 10 fouls while Central Mountain had a dozen infractions. No cards were issued in the contest.
The aggressive play did come at a cost with the game beginning in the early evening warmth of late summer, when the temperature began to drop, several players from both teams suffered from leg cramps.
The Wildcats had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks and 9-7 for shots on goal. Hunter Bierly led the ‘Dawgs with 3 shots and Ezra Miller had 2 for ‘Shore. Trey Gentzel had 4 shots on goal with Brown recording 3 for CM.
The keepers for both teams kept pace with Tim Martin for Jersey Shore and Cy Probst for Cental Mountain each recording 4 saves each on the night.
The win takes Central Mountain to 2-4 overall, 2-2 in the PHAC. Jersey Shore is at 3-5-1 on the season and 1-2-1 in the PHAC.
Both teams are back in action on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018 when Jersey Shore will host Selinsgrove and Central Mountain will host Williamsport.
