Central Mountain Wrestling Trounces Shamokin 63-6

COAL TOWNSHIP- In Central Mountain’s three-plus years in the Heartland Conference the Wildcat wrestling team has never lost a match and rarely if ever threatened. That trend continued Tuesday night with a 63-6 road win over Shamokin.

The Wildcats used three falls, five forfeits, one technical fall, one major decision and two regular decisions to take their first dual meet of the season.

There were several closely contested bouts, the best at 170 pounds where the Wildcats’ Tanner Weaver took on returning state place-winner Jacob Carpenter, seventh at states a year ago in Class AA. Weaver (4-1) had two early takedowns but Carpenter came back with a deciding third period takedown for an 8-7 victory.

The Wildcats’ Seth Andrus (5-0) took on longtime nemesis Devin Pietkewicz at 132 pounds. Andrus kept pressure on throughout the full six minutes and a late takedown earned him a 3-1 win. Andrus had won 1-pointers over Pietkewicz in the previous two seasons.

There was another 1-pointer at heavyweight where Wildcat first-year starter Jake Edwards (4-1) picked up a late takedown for a 3-2 win over Indian veteran Trent Curcie.

Central Mountain falls were recorded by Johnny Shreffler (3-1) at 113, Asher Corl (4-2) at 152 and Gage Sutliff (2-2) at 195 pounds. Forfeits went to Anson Zimmerman (1-2) at 106 pounds, Dalton Bechdel (4-2) at 120, Logan Long (5-0) at 145, Austyn Carson (4-3) at 152 and Tanner Riggle (3-2) at 220.

Kaden Powers (1-0) made his first start of the season at 126 pounds and recorded a major decision and Cody Coleman (5-2) piled up a 19-4 technical fall.

Central Mountain had a 16-5 edge in takedowns. The Wildcat junior high team downed Shamokin 75—15 and is off to a 6-0 start.

The Wildcats will next be in action Friday and Saturday, hosting their own 32-team King of the Mountain tournament, wrestling beginning at 2 p..m. Friday.
