American Legion Play: Spangler Sparks Crickets over ‘Toona
BEECH CREEK — The Beech Creek American Legion team peppered the Crickets’ home field with six extra base hits on the way to a Thursday evening 4-2 win over Altoona. The victory put the Legionnaires at 12-2 on the season, next up a trip to Bellefonte Saturday at 2 p.m.
Tanner “Spanky” Spangler got the win for Beech Creek as he and reliever Ethan Watkins combined on a 4-hitter. Spangler retired the first 12 Altoona batters and worked into the sixth inning when he needed relief help from Watkins as the visitors scored their only two runs.
Meanwhile Beech Creek chipped away, scoring in four different innings. Brandon Miller doubled to start off the bottom of the first and scored off a single from Toner Corl. Two more runs came across in the fourth inning; one of them after Landon Breon singled and came home on an Austyn Carson triple. The final run came in the fifth, Corl singling and scoring on a triple from Talon Falls.
Corl went 3-for-3 with his triple and a walk and Carson finished with a double and triple. Miller, Koch and Falls had doubles and Breon a single.
