Bald Eagles Rally over Millersville 36-28

lhu-footballMILLERSVILLE – The Lock Haven University football team (2-6, 2-3 PSAC East) saw a number of players step up and the Bald Eagles rallied in the final seconds to beat Millersville University (0-8, 0-5 PSAC East), 36-28 today on the road in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action.

The win is Lock Haven’s second straight and marks first-year head coach Dave Taynor’s first road victory. LHU rallied for 15 fourth-quarter points, including 12 in the final two seconds to cap off the remarkable comeback-victory.

The Bald Eagles led 21-14 at the half, but Millersville had things tied at 21 points apiece after three quarters, and the Marauders led by four at 28-24 with 5:38 remaining in the game, which set it up for the late-game LHU fireworks.

Lock Haven was without several regular offensive starters, but the guys called upon were more than up for to the task, including backup quarterback Shaun Jones (Harrisburg, Pa./Kentucky Christian University), third- string quarterback Cameron Tobias (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns Valley) and The Haven’s No. 2 running back Malyk Harris (Harrisburg, Pa./Albright College).

Jones started in replace of Caleb Walton (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) and threw for 177 yards (13-25, 1INT) and one touchdown. Jones was replaced late by Tobias late in the game, who threw his first career TD pass with two second left. Tobias finished 2-for-4 (28 yards, 1 TD).

Harris was nothing short of sensational as he got his first career start at running back. He carried the ball 28 times for 200 yards and two TDs. It’s the first 200-yard rushing game for a Bald Eagle and the most in a single game for a Lock Haven player since 2005.

Tight end Del’Vaughn Dennis (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) had a monster game, finishing with seven catches for 86 yards and two scores.

Trailing 28-24 with just two seconds left on the clock, LHU faced a third-down and 10 from the Millesville 11-yard line. Tobias, who has had replaced Jones on this drive, hit Dennis for the go-ahead touchdown. It was the first TD pass of Tobias’ (redshirt-freshman) career and the second TD grab of the game for Dennis.

On the ensuing kickoff, Lock Haven’s Connor Marsico (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) snagged a Millersville fumble on a failed lateral attempt and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown with no time left on the clock, giving the Bald Eagles the thrilling 36-28 comeback-win.

Tony Ballon (Jersey City, N.J./Harrisburg) and Mike Williams (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) led the Bald Eagles defensive effort with 13 and nine tackles, respectively. Ballon’s 13 stops were a game-high.

Lock Haven returns home for a Week 9 PSAC East contest with Kutztown University at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 31.
