LHU Falls to West Chester

lhu-footballLOCK HAVEN – The Lock Haven University football team (0-5, 0-2 PSAC East) got off to a quick start, but in the end West Chester (3-2, 2-0 PSAC East) proved too strong in the second half as the Golden Rams won 33-9 today in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action.

The Bald Eagles struck early and led 6-0 less than two minutes into the game. After LHU forced a quick three-and-out, Lock Haven scored three plays later. Caleb Walton(Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) hit tight end Del’Vaughn Dennis (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) on a play action pass that went 40 yards for a touchdown. The long pass-play capped a three-play, 56-yard drive and put The Haven up 6-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, West Chester’s Brandon Monk returned it 96 yards for a TD.

Both teams missed the point after attempt after their first TDs of the game and Lock Haven and West Chester were tied 6-6 with 12:49 left in the first quarter.

LHU went up 9-6 after Alex Boumerhi (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) connected on a field goal from 20 yards out with 9:25 left in the first quarter.

West Chester tied the game as time expired in the first half on a 32-yard field.

The Golden Rams got their offense going in the second half – scoring 10 points in the third quarter – and WCU quarterback Pat Moriarty threw for two TDs in the fourth – as West Chester pulled away.

Walton threw for 132 yards and one touchdown today. He’s thrown for at least one TD in every game this season and now has 33 career touchdown passes, the third-most in school history.

Dennis enjoyed a breakout game, making six catches for 76 yards and his first career TD. He entered the game with just five catches on the season.

Daniel Strawbridge (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) and Tony Ballon (Jersey City, N.J./Harrisburg) led the Bald Eagle defensive effort. Strawbridge made a game-high 12 tackles, including a game-high 10 solo stops. Ballon finished with 10 tackles (8 solo).

The Bald Eagles hit the road next week (Saturday, October 10) to take on Shippensburg at 1 p.m.

The Week 5 loss to West Chester dropped LHU to 0-5 (0-2 PSAC East) on the season … QB Caleb Walton has thrown for at least one TD in all five games this season … He’s thrown a TD pass in six straight games dating back to last season’s season finale … His TD pass today marks the 33rd of his career, No. 3 all-time at Lock Haven … Walton needs just three more TD passes to move into second all-time … Walton now has 4,301 career passing yards (No. 4 all-time) … Today marked Walton’s 21stconsecutive start (also his 21st career start at QB) … Senior Luke Erdman started his 35th consecutive game at center … Erdman has started every game since Week 4 of his freshman year (2012) … TEDel’Vaughn Dennis enjoyed a breakout game, finishing with career-highs in catches (6), yards (76) and his first career TD catch.
