The Sugar Valley Rural Charter School softball team heads into the spring season with a mix of experienced returners and new faces, ready to take on a challenging year with determination and heart. Under the leadership of head coach Greg Weaver, the team’s focus is on growth—on and off the field.
This year’s squad includes 11 players, with eight returning from last season. A core group of upperclassmen are stepping into crucial roles, including the pitching circle—an area where none of the key pitchers have prior experience.
Cheyenne Weaver returns as a leader behind the plate but will also see time on the mound and in other spots as needed. Olivia Johnson will contribute at second base, on the mound, and potentially at shortstop. Hattie Cinnamon, who anchors third base, will also take on pitching responsibilities.
“These three girls are really stepping up and out of their realm into the pitcher role, as none of them have ever pitched,” Coach Weaver said. “I tell these girls as I tell them all… ‘Have confidence, compete, and most of all, have fun.’”
Rounding out the returning lineup are Olivia Clester at first base, Ellie Scarborough who will split time catching, at third, and in the outfield, Lyla Breon in the outfield, and utility players Kayleigh Showers and Najiah Staton.
Joining the team this spring are three newcomers: freshman Jaelynn Smith, sophomore Rayleigh Delane, and senior Kylee Hill.
Coach Weaver’s goal is to build confidence in his players and lay the foundation for the future of the program. “They need to learn the game and play as a team, but all while having fun,” he said.
With a strong core of returning players and a clear focus on development, the Lady Phoenix are ready to rise to the challenge this season.
