Words of Grace

By Rev. Mahlon Nevel

Nicodemus, a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews, came to visit with Jesus one night. He addressed Jesus as Rabbi, which means teacher.

He believed that Jesus must have come from God. No man could have done all those miracles unless God had been with him.
As Jesus talked to Nicodemus about spiritual truths, he asked Jesus, “How can these things be?” Jesus then asked him a question:

“If I have told you earthly things, and you believe not, how shall you believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?” (John 3:12)

There are both earthly things and heavenly things. If Jesus came from God, and God was with him, then he was qualified to speak about heavenly things.

No one has ever ascended
up into heaven, but the one who came down from heaven. That is Jesus, the Son of man, is now in heaven. (v.13)

Nicodemus came to Jesus that night with some questions. If he wanted to know about heaven, what it is like and how to get there, he got to talk to the right person.

Whoever believes in Jesus will not perish, but will have eternal life. (v.15) Eternal life in heaven with Jesus:

“Dreams cannot picture that world so fair.
Sorrow and death cannot enter there.
Time does not breathe on its fadeless bloom.
Beyond the seas and beyond the tomb – It is there.”
