By Joe Walker
MILL HALL- The Central Mountain Wildcats racked up five pins in the first five bouts and never looked back as they remained unbeaten with a solid 49-15 win over the visiting Golden Tigers of Hollidaysburg on Tuesday night in front of a senior night crowd. The win upped the Wildcats record to 10-0 and dropped the Golden Tigers to 6-3 on the season.
Wildcat sophomore Patrick Tarantella (20-9) wasted no time in getting the Wildcats rolling as he took down and pinned the Golden Tigers’ Catrina Parks (1-2) in seven seconds of the first period to make it 6-0 Wildcats. Then at 145 pounds, Wildcat freshman Hayes Donley found himself trailing 9-1 in the final period, when he reversed and pinned James Bialo (7-13) in 1:32 of the final period. Donley is now 8-4 on the season and Wildcats were up 12-0.
Wildcat senior Dalton Perry (22-2) made his return from injury a short one, as he took down Mason Schenck (21-10) twice in the first period before recording a fall in 1:17 of the first period and it was an 18-0 Wildcat lead. Perry, a Bucktail senior, upped his career mark to 141-14 with 86 falls.
Senior Luke Ananea bumped up a weight as well and went out and recorded a fall over Taylor Rogers in 45 seconds of the season period. Ananea, now 19-6, was leading 13-2 at the time of the fall. Junior Dalton McDermott (11-8) got himself into a big 11-3 hole in the first period of his
172 pound bout, but reversed and pinned Blake Kennedy (15-10) in 1:05 of the second period to put the Wildcats up 30-0.
The Golden Tigers’ Mitchell Baronner (24-10) moved up to 189 and got the final takedown of the match to come away with a wild 12-8 decision over Wildcat senior Bryce Brungard (20-10) to make it a 30-3 Wildcat lead. In another close bout, Wildcat sophomore Kai Fravel (13-8) got the final takedown at 215 pounds to win a 7-6 decision over Rocco Cacciotti (6-5) and make it 33-3 Wildcats.
Wildcat junior Nicholas Lose won his way into the Wildcat line-up at 285 pounds, but was takedown with a headlock and pinned in 14 seconds by Scott Payne (17-11). Lose fell to 3-5 on the season and suffered an injury during the move.
The Golden Tigers’ Connor Sidney (17-9) received a forfeit at 107 pounds, as Wildcat Sophomore Cael Dorman was out of the line-up due to illness. The six pointer cut the Wildcat lead to 33-15. Sophomore Gavin Heverly (19-5) used two takedowns enroute to a solid 7-1 decision over Brayden Sidney (20-8) at 114 pounds and put the Wildcats up 36-15 to ice the dual meet for the Wildcats.
Junior Collin Bauman (12-10) used two takedowns to help him to an 8-4 decision over Landon Krupka (21-10) at 121 pounds and upped the lead to 39-15. Sophomore Luke Garman (12-11) recorded a 13-0 major decision over Logan Krupka (121) at 127 pounds to make it 43-15. In the final bout of the night, sophomore standout Aiden Kunes (22-5) built up a quick 11-0 lead before pinning the Golden Tigers’ Jacob Brua (18-9) at 127 pounds and the six pointer set the final at 49-15.
“We had a couple guys (Hayes Donley and Dalton McDermott) both get behind their guys early, but they kept battling back and eventually pinned their guys. That really helped set the tone for us, of course we don’t want to see them get down like that, but they kept battling back which is the positive thing”. Commented Head Coach Biff Walizer after the solid win.
“Gavin (Heverly) and his guy had three close matches last year, Gavin winning all three, but tonight Gavin took charge and almost had a major decision win. It is also nice to have the depth we have to be able to move guys around and get match-ups we like a lot of the time. One thing we do need to work on with the guys is after giving up the single leg, we need to fight harder, we are giving up takedowns too easily when we have given up a leg on a takedown attempt by their opponent.” added Coach Walizer.
It was senior night for both the boys and girls wrestling squads, the Wildcat senior boys are Dalton Perry, Bryce Brungard, Luke Ananea and Jacob Weaver, who suffered a shoulder injury earlier in the season and saw his final season come to an unfortunate end. Two senior members of the Lady Wildcats are Jayce Tripp and Andrea Samaniego, while Kaitlyn Bowman is a senior team manager on the Wildcat boys team.
In the junior high match prior to the varsity meet, the Golden Tiger junior high came from behind to post a 46-36 win over the Little Wildcats. Winning by falls for the Wildcat junior high were Roman Weikel (80), Hunter Nace (101) and Brayden Wolfgang (115). Ashton Falls (130) and Maverick Shultz (138) won by forfeit, while Hayden Hanley (122) and Evan Batterson (190) both posted decision wins.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Thursday night, when the Junior high and both the boys and girls varsity teams will be in action, as they will take on the Bulldogs of Jersey Shore at the Bulldog gym. The Wildcat varsity boys will then head to West Branch High School for the 45-team Ultimate Warrior Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
