LHU’s Miller clean sheet, Tavares goal leads Women’s Soccer to victory over Mansfield

LOCK HAVEN– Julia Tavares scored and Megan Miller secured a shutout to lead the Lock Haven women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Mansfield in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 11).

The Bald Eagles defense, led by Miller in goal, were relentless all afternoon and fought off endless Mountaineer attacks to earn the victory.

Under first-year head coach Jesse Urquhart, Lock Haven improves to 1-0-2 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC East. Mansfield falls to 0-1-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

After a scoreless 28 minutes to start the game, the Bald Eagles broke through to take a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal by Tavares.

After a perfect throw-in by Ellie Gerhart, Elizabeth Shultz sent a header to Tavares, who settled and fired a shot passed the outstretched Mountaineer keeper. The score marked the first goal of the season for Tavares and the first helper for Shultz and Gerhart.

Midway through the second half, the Mounties broke through the Bald Eagle defense to create a 1-on-1 opportunity with Miller, who made an initial save before recovering with a diving stop off the rebound attempt to keep the score tied.

Miller finished with six saves to earn her second straight shutout.

The Lock Haven defensive unit fought off game-leading 10 shots from the Mounties.

The Bald Eagles finished with three shots on goal by three different players.
