SHAMOKIN- It’s been a season of ups and downs for Sugar Valley baseball. The Phoenix have been battered by much larger schools throughout 2024, but this strong group of players under head coach Chuck Walizer have never given up.
On Tuesday night the Phoenix would end their season in a hard fought 4-1 loss against a much larger Shamokin team, but in typical Sugar Valley fashion they would put up a fight.
SVRC would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when senior Lance Winchester would knock in Bryar Martin with a single.
The host Indians would score a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Sugar Valley senior pitcher Cayden Weaver would hold Shamokin in check the remainder of the game and only allow two more runs on the day. A run in the third inning and another run in the fifth inning. Weaver allowed just 6 Shamokin hits in six innings of work.
The 4-1 loss finalized the Phoenix’s record at 2-16.
Winchester led the offense with a pair of hits to finish out an excellent senior season. Lincoln Breon Bryar Martin, Jarron McCloskey and Layden Bryan also collected hits for Sugar Valley.
