Sugar Valley softball opens season with thrilling 10-8 win over St. Joseph’s

Booneville- Despite bone-chilling temps, Sugar Valley Rural Charter School’s Lady Phoenix softball team started the 2024 season on fire. Sugar Valley would fend off a fierce fifth inning rally from the visiting St. Joseph’s Academy Wolfpack to come away with the 10-8 nonconference victory on Friday afternoon.

The Lady Phoenix jumped out to a 1-0 after one inning of play, but St. Joseph’s would score a run in the top of the third inning to knot things up at 1-1. Sugar Valley responded in their half of the inning with a pair of runs to retake the lead for good at 3-1.

The Lady Phoenix would rise in a big way the following inning by plating 7 runs and built a 10-1 lead, but the visitors were far from done.

In the top of the very next inning the Wolfpack would match Sugar Valley’s previous inning’s total by scoring 7 runs to shrink the hosts lead to 10-8.

Strong defense and pitching would keep St. Joseph’s scoreless the rest of the way and allow the Lady Phoenix to pick up the win.

Olivia Clester and Kayleigh Showers each picked up a pair of hits in the victory. Showers also had a pair of RBI’s. Dakota Holdren, Cheyenne Weaver, Lily Mundrick and Lyla Breon all collected hits for Sugar Valley, as well. Weaver’s hit was a double.

Sugar Valley (1-0) will now begin their grueling Mid Penn Conference schedule on Tuesday when they are set to travel to Montgomery.
