LHU Softball splits non-conference twinbill at Holy Family

PHILADELPHIA – Pitching and timely hitting led the Lock Haven softball team to a non-conference split with Holy Family University on the road on Tuesday afternoon (March 12). The Bald Eagles won the opener 4-3 and dropped the nightcap, 6-1.

With the split, the Bald Eagles move to 3-7 through the early spring, while Holy Family is now 3-14.

Game One: Lock Haven 4, Holy Family 3

The Bald Eagles belted out a game-high nine hits on their way to four runs, while the pitching duo of Faith Persing (Montgomery, Pa./Bloomsburg) (W, 2-2) and Keiva Middleton (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) limited Holy Family to three runs to secure the victory.

Persing picked up her second victory in the circle after limiting the Tigers to three runs on six hits in four innings, while striking out two. Middleton shut the door in relief, as she tossed three scoreless innings and also struck out a pair.

The Tigers opened the scoring with a solo run in the bottom half of the first, but Lock Haven answered with runs in the next three innings to lead, 4-1.

Holy Family pushed across a run in both the fourth and fifth inning to trim the deficit to one, but the Bald Eagles halted the rally to steal game one, 4-3.

Persing helped her cause in the top of the fourth with an RBI-triple at the dish to plate a run. Persing drove in two runs in the contest.

Summer Peters (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and Riley McClellan (Granville Summit, Pa./Troy) both finished with two hits, highlighted by McClellan’s pair of doubles and two runs scored.

Morgan Karasek (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) and Hailey Irwin (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York) joined Persing with RBIs.

Game Two: Holy Family 6, Lock Haven 1

Holy Family scored in each of the first four innings to build a 6-0 lead and ultimately put the game out of reach.

The Bald Eagles scored in the top of the fourth when Maci Brodzina (Warriors Mark, Pa./Tyrone) belted a solo home run down the left field line. Brodzina led the Bald Eagles’ offense with a 3-for-3 showing at the plate, while the solo homer was the first of her career.

Delaney Good (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) and Peters both finished with two hits, including a double.

Kinley Gioglio (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) and Jada Schellhammer (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) combined to pitch three scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
