Optimist’s Roundtable

By Martha Sykes

John Wesley has been credited with these words: “ Do all the good you can, by all means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.“ These words were taken from a collection of sermons that were written in 1799!

While we live out our earthly life, God wants us to do good deeds in His holy name. In the book of Galatians 6:9, Paul tells us, “ And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”

This verse is telling us that we should never get tired of doing good things for God. It may get discouraging sometimes when we feel like we are not doing the right thing but if we pray about it and do those things that our heart tells us to do, that is what God wants us to do. We should always be ready to follow His will and do things that He wants us to do.

Throughout scripture, we are reminded to bear good fruit, to love our neighbors, to not lose heart, to be grateful, to be compassionate, and Paul is reminding us to never get tired of doing good with the time that Lord has given to us. In evidence of your faith being alive is that love, joy, peace, patience, and many other fruits of the spirit will be produced naturally by you. The good things that we do through those qualities helps to make the world a better place it makes our Father in heaven be pleased with us.

This is something that we need to instill in the hearts of our children also as we see so many young people struggle with the tough situations they encounter every day.

In this world, we sure do need more good than evil, so keep doing good things in the name of Jesus! We reap what we sow.
