Optimist’s Roundtable

By Martha Sykes

It is always a joy to hear the music of Christmas! I never get tired of singing the hymns of the Christmas story in church and listening to the many Christian songs on the radio. What fills you with wonder as you hear or sing the songs of the season?

In the first chapters of the gospel of Luke, there is a lot of singing in response to the miracle of Jesus. The angels sing, Zechariah sings as he becomes a father, as does Simeon.

David Jeremiah is an evangelist that I follow and he has said that we should never lose our “awe” moments when it comes to the miracle of Christmas.

Mary, the mother of Jesus, also put her thoughts into music as we read in Luke 1:46-55, which has been recognized as Mary’s song, or the Magnificat. Being the mother of Jesus was not always easy, but she sang even while her life was filled with both joy and pain.

Mary glorified God in song for what He was going to do through her. in the same way, our Christmas song can express our beliefs. It can be amazing sometimes when we hear a song that seems to express exactly how we feel in our own hearts. I hope the songs of Christmas bring joy to you for the season and hope for the future
