Muncy gets back on track, wins at Bucktail 49-20
FARWELL- The Muncy Lady Indians start to the 2023-24 season hasn’t been what’s come to be expected. Muncy, a perennial District IV powerhouse started the season at 1-4. Losses to heavy hitters Warrior Run, Jersey Shore, St. John Neumann and Meadowbrook Christian has their season mark deceiving and on Saturday night in Farwell those Lady Indians of old were firing on all cylinders.
Muncy would use the strong inside play of Nolah Moyer, mixed with speedy guard play from Addi Eyer to open the game on a 15-0 run.
Matti Mason would finally break up the Muncy run with a basket with 1:25 remaining in the first quarter. Eva Sockman would connect on a basket in the quarter to, but Bucktail would find themselves down 17-4 after one frame.
The Lady Bucks’ defense would stiffen up in the second quarter. Muncy found themselves in a bit of a fight heading to the locker rooms following a narrow 8-6 second quarter advantage.
The Lady Indians would see their 15-point halftime lead swell following a 14-4 third quarter advantage.
Muncy’s key to success entering their Mid Penn Conference road trip to Bucktail was to stop the Lady Bucks’ leading scorer in Mak Wagner and they did just that. Wagner wouldn’t score her first point of the game until early in the fourth quarter at the 6:20 mark. By then the Lady Indians would have already had the game in hand with a 39-16 lead.
Muncy’s 10-6 fourth quarter would wrap things up and set the final score.
Eva Sockman played a tough game for Bucktail, by leading the way with 10 points on the night. Matti Mason finished with 6 points.
Head coach Suellen Wagner’s squad will have their work cut out for them next week with back to back road games. First up is a trip to defending Mid Penn Conference champions and District IV 2A champions of a season ago in South Williamsport (1-3, 1-0). Then they will make the long trip to Ulysses the following night and face District 9’s Northern Potter (3-3).
