Words of Grace
By Rev. Mahlon Nevel
Abimelech was one of a number of wicked rulers who lived in the time. of the Judges. Because there was no king in Israel, every one did what they thought was right in their own eyes. (Judges 17:6; 21:25)
In those days, Abimelech and his followers went up against the city of Thebez to take it captive (9:50) He fought hard, but there was something he could not overcome.
Inside the city there was a strong tower. All the men and women fled to it. When the door was shut they got themselves to the top of the tower where they were safe.
Proverbs 18:10 tells us that the name of the Lord is a tower for us. When we run into it, we are safe.
Commenting on this verse H.A. Ironside writes: “The name of Jehovah stands for the Lord Himself. To run into it, as into a strong tower, is therefore to confide in Him in the time of trouble.”
In the day that the Lord had delivered David out of the hand of all his enemies, he wrote this song that begins in II Samuel 22:2. He describes the Lord as his rock, fortress, deliverer, shield, and high tower.
David learned to cry out to the Lord when his heart was overwhelmed: “plead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy” (Psalm 61:2,3).
We have a safe place where, according to the words of an old hymn, we are “Safe and secure from all alarms.”
