Words of Grace
By Rev. Mahlon Nevel
Our God wants to supply all that we need. He is able to do this according to the riches of his glory in Christ. (Philippians 4:19)
The church of the Laodiceans (Revelation 3:14) was in great need, but the members didn’t know it. As a result, they were only a lukewarm church. (V. 16).
“We are rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing,” they were saying of themselves. But they didn’t know how wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked they really were spiritually. (V.17).
The Laodicean church was a rich church, and getting richer all the time. What the church really needed was the Lord Jesus himself.
But Jesus was standing outside, Knocking at the door. If anybody in the church would open the door, he would come in. (V.20)
If they would confess their need, but they thought that they had need of nothing. George O. Webster made this confession in a hymn:
“I need Jesus, my need I now confess; No friend like Him in times of deep distress; I need Jesus, the need I gladly own; Though some may bear their load alone, Yet I need Jesus,”
English preacher Charles Spurgeon, in a sermon, said, “Unsearchable Riches are in Him, though Unsearchable Poverty may be in you.” Then he quoted the following:
Let not conscience make you linger, Nor of fitness fondly dream! All the fitness He requireth, Is to feel your need of Him.”
