LH wrestlers have rugged start to new season
BETHLEHEM, PA – The No. 23 Lock Haven men’s wrestling team (0-2) opened the dual portion of the 2023-24 schedule Saturday at the Journeymen Wrestle Mania event. The Bald Eagles opened the day with a 23-18 loss to No. 13 Arizona State, and The Haven closed the day with a loss to Army, 33-11.
Top-ranked Anthony Noto (Lima, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) made his much-anticipated season debut and he dominated at 125 pounds with a pair of tech falls. He was the only Bald Eagle to go 2-0 on the day.
Noto, No. 20 Gable Strickland (Benton, Pa./Benton), Eric Alderfer (Harleysville, Pa./Faith Christian Academy) and No. 28 Isaac Reid (Saltsburg, Pa./Kiski) all won vs. nationally-ranked Arizona State.
Noto looked fantastic start-to-finish on the way to an 18-3 tech fall (4:40) win over Arizona State’s Max Brewster. Strickland (133) earned a solid 8-2 decision over Carter Dibert and Reid majored Tarik Sutkovic, 9-1 at 285. At 157, Alderfer won by injury default.
Avery Bassett (Middleburg, Pa./Midd-West) turned in a notable effort vs. ASU as he was edged out 8-7 at 165.
Noto and Nick Stonecheck (Alpharetta, Ga./Buford) put the Bald Eagles in the win column vs. Army.
Noto once again looked to be in mid-season form as he rolled to anther bonus-point win. This time, the returning All-American, topped No. 27 Ethan Berginc of Army 20-5.
Stonecheck recorded a win by injury default at 149, and Alderfer turned in a strong effort as 157, as he was edged out 5-1 by No. 29 Nate Lukez of Army.
