Words of Grace

By Rev. Mahlon Nevel

Angels were created by the Creator as spirit beings. Then God created human beings to be “partakers of flesh and blood.” (Hebrews 2:14)

In the order of creation, man was made “a little lower than the angels.” But when Adam and Eve sinned in the garden the whole human race went into bondage.

That’s when God had a to deliver sinners from this bondage. He made his Son to be a partaker of flesh and blood like us, to deliver us from the bondage of sin. (V.15)

That same verse describes us as being all of our lifetime subject to this bondage. Only the Deliverer can set us free from the guilt of sin.

Jesus was made a little lower than the angels to suffer death for us. By the grace of God he tasted death for every one of us. (V.9)

The story is told about a twelve-year-old who was throwing stones and accidentally killed, one of his family’s geese. He buried it, thinking that his parents wouldn’t notice that one of the twenty-four birds was missing.

But his sister called him aside and said, “I saw what you did, and if you don’t offer to do the dishes tonight, I’m going to tell Mother.” Frightened, the boy felt bound to do the dishes.

Later, he surprised his sister by telling her it was her turn. When she reminded him of what she could do, he responded, “I’ve already told Mother, and she has forgiven me. Now you do the dishes. I’m free again.”
