Obituary – William M. “Lane” Desmond

William M. “Lane” Desmond, 86, of Flemington, passed away Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport Hospital.

Born May 6, 1937 in Renovo, he was the son of the late William Desmond and Bertha (Marsh) Kost.

Lane was a 1955 graduate of Renovo High School.

Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving until his honorable discharge in 1959.

On March 9, 1957 at Renovo UMC, he married the love of his life, the former Janet Lea Bowes, who survives.

Lane was a member of the Flemington UMC.

He was employed as an insurance salesman and financial planner with Metropolitan Life until his retirement.

Lane enjoyed his time spent outdoors, especially hunting and fishing from his camp, Smokehouse; and the yearly family trips to Canada.  Lane lived every year for the day Baker’s Run was being stocked.  He took many of his grandchildren and their friends to help stock.  Beyond all, he was a devoted and hard-working husband, father and grandfather and cherished the time he spent with his family.

In addition to his wife, Janet, he is survived by three children, Doug (Deb) Desmond of Wyoming, Todd (Jeanette) Desmond of Beech Creek and Tammy (Jeff) Rager of Mill Hall; two brothers, Dennis (Nancy) Desmond of Georgia and David (Linda) Desmond of Williamsport; eight grandchildren: Clayton Desmond (Brittany Nyman), Garrett (Celia) Desmond, Kelly Jo (Blake) Barth, Megan Desmond (Andrew Shaffer), Heidi (Ryan) Eberhart, Brooke (Steve) Hargenrader, Colton (Kristi) Rager, Courtney Rager; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert “Bob” Desmond.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of his family with burial taking place at Schenck’s Cemetery, Howard.
