County sheriff’s office warns of phone call scam
LOCK HAVEN, PA – The office of Clinton County Sheriff Kerry Stover Thursday warned county residents to be on the alert for a scam in which the callers represent themselves as deputy sheriffs. In doing so, the callers offer the recipients “a way out” of alleged pending warrants or civil paperwork:
SCAM ALERT…. SCAM ALERT!!!!!
This morning we are getting reports that people are receiving phone calls from Clinton County Deputies “Gates” or “Washburn”. These callers are being told by “Gates or Washburn” that there is a Warrant for their arrest…. OR …. That they need to serve civil paperwork on those people.
This is an absolute SCAM. We DO NOT have any Gates or Washburn working in this office. We are not calling about warrants or attempting to serve civil papers yet offering you a way out of those papers during a call.
We may indeed call you about civil papers to assist us in serving the correct people but we are not offering any WAY OUT of these papers.
PLEASE PLEASE USE CAUTION when talking with these callers. They are not Deputies in the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office. They are scammers trying to take advantage of you in some way.
Please do not give out ANY personal information, account numbers etc.
