Bucktail boys return to action, fall at high-powered Muncy 90-37
By Bees O’Brien
MUNCY, PA- December 12 was the last time the Bucktail boys basketball team played a game. That game was a 60-41 victory over Benton. The Bucks finally returned to the court on Wednesday night and unfortunately for them it was against one of the district’s premier programs in Muncy. The result was a 90-37 win for the Indians.
The Indians feature reigning Mid Penn Conference MVP Ross Eyer, who also was a first time All-State selection last season.
Bucktail wasn’t phased in the first quarter and ran with the Mid Penn power throughout the quarter. The depleted Bucks would get 5 points from both Brody Pentz and Ethan Charcalla, a three-point basket from Brett Mason and only trailed 17-14 at one point in the quarter. The more experienced Indians would close out the quarter on a 9-0 run to build the 24-15 lead after one quarter of play.
The effort was impressive, but in the second quarter Muncy would flex their muscles. Ross Eyer would step up big. Eyer would score 9 points in the quarter, including a thunderous dunk off the glass. The 25-4 second quarter advantage would doom Bucktail’s hopes and give Muncy the 49-19 lead at the break.
An 18-10 third quarter Muncy advantage was followed by a 23-8 fourth quarter Indians’ advantage to set the final at 90-37.
Brett Mason led Bucktail with 15 points and Brody Pentz added 9 in the defeat.
Noah Confer was one of four Indians to reach double figures with his game-high 22 points. Branson Eyer added 17, his cousin Ross Eyer added 16 and Michael Fry finished with 11 points.
Muncy improved to 9-2 and 1-1 in Mid Penn play. The Bucks dropped to 2-3 and 1-1 in conference play.
The road back won’t get any easier for Bucktail on Saturday. The Bucks will host another conference power in South Williamsport with a 2:30 p.m. tip time.
