Balanced attack lifts Bucktail past Lady Owls, 57-25
ALLPORT, PA- Nine different Lady Bucks reached the scoring column in Bucktail’s dominating 57-25 consolation game victory over Harmony on Thursday afternoon in the West Branch holiday tournament.
“We had nice scoring by a variety of players today.” Head coach Carl Gentzyel said of his Lady Bucks following his team’s fifth win of the young season.
Several players stepped up in the victory over the Lady Owls. Mak Wagner led the charge early by netting 8 of her game-high 23 points in the first and helped Bucktail (5-2) build a 17-4 edge in the first quarter.
Winless Harmony (0-6) fought their way back in the second quarter and were only outscored 9-8 in the frame and trailed 26-12 at the break.
Wagner continued her hot hand in the third quarter by drilling a pair of three-point baskets and netted 8 of Bucktail’s 13 third quarter points. Harmony countered with just 9 points and the Lady Bucks were in cruise control heading into the fourth quarter, 39-21.
Behind 8 fourth quarter points from freshman Eva Sockman, Bucktail would close out the game 18-4 to set the final. Sockman’s 8 points was a varsity career high. She also added 6 rebounds.
Matti Mason had a productive birthday game. Mason, who was celebrating her 16th birthday scored 11 points, had 3 steals and dished out 3 assists.
Alexis Lowery grabbed 10 rebounds, which gave a tournament total of 16 boards in two games.
Bucktail’s season is about to get tougher next week as they are set to face the two top programs in the Mid Penn Conference. They’ll begin with a trip to Muncy on Tuesday, Jan. 3 and then it’s a home date with conference leading South Williamsport (5-2, 3-0) on Friday, Jan. 6 in Farwell.
