Wildcats advance six to K o M quarterfinals

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP, PA – Central Mountain wrestling coach Biff Walizer thought his team did alright but saw room for improvement after the Friday first day of the Wildcat Booster Club’s mammoth King of the Mountain tournament.

Central Mountain found itself in fourth place in the 29-team affair, six Wildcats advancing to Saturday’s 10 a.m. round of 16, another three alive in the consolations.

The Wildcats were led by their three undefeated middleweights, Luke Simcox (133 pounds), Dalton Perry (139 pounds) and Griffin Walizer (145 pounds). Also into the round of eight are Braylen Corter (152 pounds), Gino Serafini (160 pounds) and Brayden Blackwell (185 pounds). All went 2-0 except Perry who went 1-0 after a first-round bye.

Those advancing in the consolations to Saturday action are Jake Weaver (172 pounds), Rocco Serafini (189 pounds) and Giovanni Tarantella (215 pounds).

The team race saw Phillipsburg (NJ) with the lead after day one with 81 points, followed by Warrior Run with 66.5, Burrell 63, Central Mountain 61.5 and Cumberland Valley fifth with 59. Results from other area schools include Mifflin County 9th with 54 points; Bald Eagle Area 10th with 51.5, Bellefonte 14th with 49, State College 16th with 46 and defending champion Williamsport 21st with 42 points.

Coach Walizer said he was “pleased with the effort” but lamented that some of his wrestlers had difficulty getting off the bottom and said that would be addressed in future practices, but overall “they went out fighting and that’s all we can ask of them.”

The Saturday schedule includes the quarterfinals at 10 a.m., semifinals at 12:45 p.m. and the championship and consolation finals at 4:15 p.m. Therecord-online will audio/video stream all Saturday bouts on a pay-per-view basis, the cost $30, all proceeds to the Wildcat Wrestling Booster Club.
