Strong Fourth Quarter powers LH women’s basketball past Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, MD – The Lock Haven women’s basketball team (1-2) entered the fourth quarter trailing Frostburg State (1-2), but exploded in the final ten minutes to take the non-conference contest 76-69.

The Bald Eagles trailed after each of the opening three quarters on Wednesday night. The Bobcats got some traction at the end of the opening period and took a 16-10 lead into the second quarter.

Frostburg State looked in control and took a nine-point lead into halftime at 34-25. The Bobcats shot 53 percent in the second quarter and seemed to be cruising to victory.

Out of the halftime break, the Bald Eagles immediately chipped away at the lead. Alana Robinson (Rockaway, N.J./Pope John Paul II) notched seven quick points early in the quarter and The Haven was able to knot things up at 41-41.

Frostburg grabbed a 50-46 lead going into the fourth, but the final ten minutes were all Bald Eagles. Lock Haven outscored the Bobcats 30-19 in the final quarter and held the hosts to just 28 percent from the field over that span. The Bald Eagles led by as many as nine and notched their first win of the season 76-69.

Robinson was tied for the game-high and exploded for her career best of 23 points. The freshman was a perfect 11-11 from the free throw line and hauled in five rebounds. Robinson was also a strong presence defensively blocking four Bobcat shots.

Four total Bald Eagles tallied double figures as Taylor Leidy (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) notched 14, Olivia Smith (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley (Frostburg State)) scored 12 and Brooke Lawyer (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) chipped in with 10.

Jackie Fetsko (Marion Center, Pa./Marion Center) led The Haven on the glass and chipped in six rebounds. She also added two steals defensively, but Lawyer led the way in that stat with three steals of her own.

Frostburg State shot slightly better from the field at 42 percent compared to Lock Haven’s 41 percent, but the Bald Eagles were buoyed by the third quarter in which LHU shot at a 60 percent clip.

The Haven is right back at it Thursday night when they host Penn State Altoona. That matchup serves as Senior Night for the Bald Eagles and tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
