LHU: Football Edged Out in PSAC East Clash
LOCK HAVEN, PA – Quarterback Samuel Barber (Johnstown, Pa./Greater Johnstown) completed 13 of 16 pass attempts while throwing for 111 yards and one touchdown, and the Lock Haven football team looked poised to protect the home turf, but in the end, visiting Bloomsburg (3-4, 2-2 PSAC East) slipped away with a narrow, 17-9, Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division victory today (Saturday, Oct. 15) in Week-7 action.
Lock Haven (1-6, 0-4 PSAC East) dominated possession and racked up 202 total yards through the air.
The Bald Eagles’ wide receiver corps once again stood out and leading the way was Justin White (Philadelphia/Ben Franklin) who hauled in five catches including the Lock Haven touchdown. Kenneth Pettiford (Long Pond, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) had six catches, Chase Holmes (Easton, Pa./Easton) made five receptions and Raymell Hester (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford) finished with four catches.
DeAndre Wakefield (Norristown, Pa./Souderton) carried the ball 16 times for 60 yards.
Defensively, Victor Hunt (Bath, Pa./Northampton Area) led the way for Lock Haven as he was all over the field. He finished with five tackles (1 TFL) and an interception. Rodney Acquah (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) added five stops.
Bloomsburg led 10-3 at halftime.
Brett Zachman (Leesburg, Fla./Eustis (Dordt)) put Lock Haven up 3-0 with 2:15 left in the first quarter when he connected for a 42-yard field goal. The score capped a nine-play, 60-yard drive that took 5:18.
Matthew Bowes hauled in a 17-yard pass from quarterback KJ Riley early in the second quarter and Bloomsburg took the 7-3 lead. The Huskies made it 10-3 when kicker Brendan McGonigle hit from 40 yards out.
After Bloomsburg punted on the first possession of the second half, Lock Haven scored on the next drive – the Bald Eagles’ first of the second half. White’s catch-and-run TD from 19 yards out capped an impressive 12-play, 92-yard (7:38) drive engineered by Barber. The Haven missed the extra point and Bloomsburg clung to a 10-9 lead with 5:24 left in the third quarter.
Bloomsburg quickly responded and Ben Ries put the Huskies up 17-9 with a four-yard sprint into the end zone with 4:08 left in the third.
Kaleb Monaco rushed for 95 yards on 15 carries and Reis added 81 yards on the ground for Bloomsburg.
The Bald Eagles will now hit the road for two straight away games. Next week, Lock Haven will travel to Kutztown for Week-8 PSAC Eastern Division action (3 p.m.) on Saturday, Oct. 22.
